To Jake, With Love

Today, you are graduating from high school, an honour roll student. In a few short months, you will start college. I can’t even begin to tell you how incredibly proud I am of you, not just for this accomplishment,
but for everything that you do and all that you are. You bring light and laughter into my life.

When you were only 5 years old, you gave me the greatest compliment I have ever been given. You asked me if I knew why you always told me I am beautiful. I said I didn’t know. You told me it was because when your heart looked at me, I was beautiful. If I am beautiful, it is because of you. I am a better person for knowing you. When I think of you, that memory always comes to mind. To me, it was and still is, the moment that defined who you are. It was then I saw the man you were going to be, the man you are.

I love you because you are my son. I like you because you have the kindest, gentlest heart of anyone I have ever met. I admire you because of your open-mindedness and your generosity. I respect you because you
are fair and stand by your convictions. You aren’t afraid to speak your mind. I appreciate that you value my opinions and seek my advice.  I applaud you because you tell me when you think I’m wrong and you own your decisions.

JakeI love you because you are my son.  I enjoy you because of your intelligence and your wit. I am relieved you embrace the sense of humour you got from me.  I prize you because of your compassion and your empathy. You are always there for the people you love. I adore you because of your refusal to stop hugging me even if your friends are around and you are all grown up. You aren’t afraid to show you care.

I love you because you are my son, but you are so much more than that. I love you because when my heart looks at you, you are beautiful.
