Coins – 30 Days of Photos Day 17

Here’s a stack of Forints.  In 2002 I gallivanted around Europe and got stuck with a ton of these things, aka Hungary’s official currency.

See, I had no local cash on me and I arrived on a rainy Sunday when all banks were closed. The rain didn’t have anything to do with it, but it certainly made having no money a little more depressing. So I walked around and finally found a bank machine, slipped in my card and promptly miscalculated the exchange rate and withdrew about 50000 Forints, roughly 300$ CDN at the time. I think. I’m still not sure.

Anyway, having 50000 Forints instantly made me The King of Budapest and of course the bank machine only gave me five 10000 Forint notes, and I didn’t realize my apparent wealth until I went to break a 10000 note on a Big Mac at the local McDonalds. You’ve never seen a cashier give you back your change so carefully and deliberately until you’re The King of Budapest and you’re buying Big Macs with 10000 notes.

The next day, I went to a bank and tried to exchange this massive amount of cash, but I couldn’t get rid of it all. The stack of Forints below is all I have left, and it’s enough for a down payment on a beautiful 3 bedroom home on the banks of the Danube.

  • When you get that three bedroom house on the Danube, we’ll all come visit. (First we have to trade our spare change for some larger bills, though.)

  • I’ll take it!

  • Priceless! I take ’em too.

  • Yes, may I please come visit too?

  • So you go to Hungary and you eat at McDonalds? Way to explore the local culture and cuisine.

    Yay

  • That’s a great shot… AND…whatcha cookin!

  • I certainly know that feeling. I have some leftover currency from Germany and France from my trip back in 1998. All just keepsakes now. If I’d had time, I would have pulled it out for a photo op.
