It Looks Like We’ve Changed Themes (again)

I don’t know what to make of it yet.

It does feel pretty speedy and it is customizable. Our previous theme was also a magazine style theme but this one makes use of featured images and a carousel to cycle through recent posts. I like that aspect except it stretches out the images to make them fit and that bugs me. Maybe there’s a way to deal with that. Hmm…
Also, our banner is now kind of small in relation to the rest of the blog. Or maybe I’m just not used to it. What do you think? Looking at our tiny banner all the way up there kind of reminds me of Krang from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You know, tiny head, large body.

Krang is actually the guy IN the suit

Or maybe not.

Anyway, what’s new? I got my first tomato today. They all said I was crazy to try growing tomatoes in Canada, but there it is.

Addendum: This is us trying out the Max Magazine theme by Gazpo.

It had potential, but it just isn’t happening. After doing a bit of research, a lot of the issues can be resolved by tweaking the code, which is fine on one hand if you don’t mind a little coding but…on the other hand, isn’t that the developer’s job? Fine, it’s a free theme. I’ll give it that.

ALSO. One of the reasons we’d decided to change themes was because out previous theme was not very SEO friendly. We wanted to fix some issues with our tags not getting indexed by Google and other search engines. However, after installing the Max Magazine theme, Webmaster Tools reported the following:

“Google has detected that some of your pages may contain hidden text or cloaking, techniques that are outside our Webmaster Guidelines

You know what that means, right? Me neither.ย  Seriously though, my assumption is that the The Max Magazine theme is poorly coded and we’re not going to waste any time trying to figure it out. So it’s on the to the next theme!

Thanks for the helpful comments everyone.

  • Light and airy just in time for summer. It must feel good to shed those extra pounds. I’ve never seen a Canadian tomato before. Do they stay green?

  • I like the theme but I see what you mean about the banner. Maybe I was just used to the old one as well? Congratulations on your tomato. Who do you plan to throw it at?

  • Um, one thing about your homepage…there’s no blog title. Are you selling garage doors with custom made graffiti now?

  • I hate it. I know I chose it but I hate it. I hate our tiny head banner and I hate the stretchy pictures and I hate that there’s no blog title. Hate it. Make it better or make it go away. Seriously.

  • I, also, miss seeing your bigger banner and your title. But the rest looks nice. Another little bitty problem for me is that the old theme clearly said if it was written by Mike or Nicky. I like knowing which of you is writing the post. Sometimes it’s quite clear but not always.

  • hmmmm —– I hate to say this – but I don’t like it at all. It’s more difficult to navigate and things look wonky to me.

  • I agree with you, Nicky.

  • Yep. That’s all that really matters when it comes down to it.

  • They’ll get red just like any old tomato. If I do end up with some green ones though, I may have to pickle them.

  • Really? Then we must be doing something wrong.

  • Yeah, the banner is a problem. It doesn’t appear to be resizeable without some coding, which is a deal breaker. This time around we’d prefer to do as little coding as possible.

  • Yep, noticed that after the fact too.

Now about those doors. What’s your budget?

  • Agreed. After long deliberation (about 3 minutes), we’re going to scrap it and try something else.

  • Yep. There are a bunch of little things wrong. That translates into a big “NO”, so we’re going to scrap it. Thanks for your input!

  • Good call.

  • The banner is a tad small ๐Ÿ˜‰ I can’t see any stretchy pictures, even though I searched all your pages. maybe you took them away?

  • The stretchy pics are on the main page, in the carousel. Still not a fan ๐Ÿ˜‰

  • OK. I see them now. Stretchy pics, not good ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Also? You can’t tell who wrote what.

Oh wait. I see someone already said that.

So….good luck with the theme change again! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I know! The ‘author’ should be visible by default.

  • Okay, the only word I could understand in this post was “tomato.” Congratulations! After eating homegrown you’ll find all the store bought ones completely tasteless.
