30 Days of Photos IV: Close Up

Today is Day 10 of MikeWJ and Ziva‘s 30 Days of Photographs IV and the theme is “Close Up”.

Have you ever seen the work of Willard Wigan? Willard Wigan is a micro sculptor who can create whole masterpieces in the eye of a needle. Some of his sculptures can’t even be properly viewed without a microscope and to create them he fashions his own tiny tools, even going so far as to use a hair from a fly’s back as a paintbrush. Seriously.

So maybe it was this fly’s dumb luck that I recently learned about Wigan’s work and took a moment to appreciate the wonder of its smallness instead of just mindlessly obliterating it with a flyswatter.  After all, I had to get the shot first, right?

1 fly was hurt in the making of this post.

Now head on over to Ziva‘s, link up, and see how everyone else interpreted today’s theme.

  • Great shot. Almost doesn’t look real. Did you come up with that one on the fly?

  • I think Willard Wigan needs a new hobby but what do I know? Oh, yeah, I have awesome hobbies: kayaking, biking, hiking, eating, sleeping…see?

  • Even your flies are different to ours! Never seen such a colourful fly. Ours are all black.

  • Who knew what you could achieve just winging it. That’s a fabulous photo, Mike,

  • Mike, I knew you had a great eye for a good photo during the first challenge. Now that you have an up-to-date camera, I’m loving what you’re doing. Really great shot. Thank you for shooting it before you killed it.

  • They are colorful close-up. I’m glad you squashed it.

  • Now that is ugly.

  • Ugly and dead, thank goodness.

  • *runs away screaming*

  • Oh, wow. The detail is amazing.

  • Wow, that’s amazing, Mike. Seriously, it is. And almost as gross as the cat tongue. 😀 I’m really glad you finally have that camera, and that you read the manual, you really have the eye for this.

Also, lol at the photo caption. 😀

Another incredible photo, Mike. I don’t even understand how you took it. You’ve got a great eye, and you’re clearly learning how to use your equipment.

    Why does that sound dirty?

Best comment of the day so far. 😀

  • Insects are so amazing! I just love them. (When they’re not dive-bombing me at night.)

    Now where is my flat swat! S P L A T

  • Jackal

    I think I just swatted Mike !!

Wowsers! Am I impressed? Hell, yeah, I am! This is an amazing shot. Was the fly on sticky paper or are you just good at sneaking up on unsuspecting, innocent flies? Whichever, this is a great shot. Maybe you should send me your camera’s instruction booklet.

  • How is it possible to get a shot that close and have the fly not fly away? Amazing!

  • 🙂

  • Those are all perfectly valid hobbies. Especially sleeping.

  • I should have put a disclaimer. The flash went off, so he became a bit more luminous. I liked that look the best, so I posted it as is.

  • Thanks, Noname. It seems to be creating some buzz 🙂

  • Yes. Yes I did.

  • I used my zoom lens, but it was lucky that he (I’m assuming it’s male for some reason) stood still for awhile. I guess he was tired 😉

  • Ouch!

  • Because it is, Mike. It’s filthy. Filthy!

  • hahahaha

  • Thank you. It’s taking some getting used to. I think I snapped 50 million shots of the fly before I settled on this one 🙂

  • They’re cool to look at, but annoying as hell.

  • Flies are pretty cool up close, and actually not so cool up close 😉

  • Yep, he was fine as a photo subject but sucked as a house guest. 🙂

  • They’re fascinating things, when they’re on the other side of the glass.

  • Thanks, Malisa. I caught him hanging out on the shower track, which is aluminium, hence the reflection. When I snuck back in with my camera, he was still posing. After the shot, I spent the next 30 minutes chasing him down with a magazine.

  • Oh man, I’ve been there and done that and god help me, continue to do that on a regular basis. The worst part is that I don’t delete the ones that aren’t quite to my liking from my computer. Gigs of bad, worse, and ugly photos need to be culled soon. (I’d do it in camera but I can’t see the detail well enough to know what I like and what I don’t until I’ve uploaded them.)

  • HOLY COW! You totally and completely NAILED IT!

  • Did you swat it after you took the photo? 🙂

  • I heard about this artist a few weeks ago. What a talent and clearly way more patient than I. Also, before I read I was lwondering how you got that shot.

  • You are quick!
